A fresh haircut can sometimes feel a bit stiff, like a new pair of shoes. And, just like new shoes, some styles only feel comfortable a few weeks after the initial shaping. But not all haircuts need breaking in. It’s all a matter of texture. Blunt edges can feel too perfect at first, but diffused lines lend immediate softness to a shape, for hair that looks lived in from the very first day. A sexy vibe is a constant at Joseph Altuzarra shows, and this season was no different. Though he tried to fool us with his first few looks of proper looking suits, the styles became more tousled and bedroom-inspired as they came down the catwalk. Altuzarra said his inspiration was taken from sinister beauty, found in film such as Rosemary’s Baby and Barry Lyndon. Playing on the retro yet sexy theme, the hair at the show was an amazing heart shape chignon topped off with a hair net. It read very Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour–– pure and yet super sexy. We can’t wait to try this lady-like yet sassy look on. To learn how to emulate the do, click through to style notes. –– Michelle Rotbart

Fashion for fall 2014 is exhibiting a distinctly sixties influence. Mini skirts, knee-high boots, bold prints, and big hair are making mod feel modern again. Adding a touch of swinging sixties to your hair is easy, just add crown-based volume. To keep the look contemporary, part hair on the side and style in loose, smooth waves. Pair with a bold cat eye to play and nude lip to play up the vintage vibe. Learn to create the look in the style notes. –– Laura Martin
