Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta –– Lady Gaga to the layman –– is the latest celebrity to take on a bob-length, choosing to premiere her freshly shorn locks on Instagram. She also revealed a new raven color that complements her complexion and eye color, rather than creating sharp contrast, as she does when she wears a blonde wig. She captioned the post with “Love my new haircut!” so perhaps the pop star is enjoying reinventing herself as a subtle vaudevillian. If you fancy a copycat look, get tips in the notes.

Beachy waves maybe a must for the spread of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, but with snow on the ground during a promotional tour in New York City, as it was for model Emily DiDonato, the weather doesn’t inspire salt-kissed strands. Instead the model wore polished, barrel curls that were smart and stylish. It’s the perfect time to fire up your wand and stay warm, just don’t forget your thermal protector. Trends are always evolving. The bob cut has been trending for a few years now, but changes in styling, proportions, and textures have gradually shifted the shape each season. The latest variations are loosely waved or curled with ends that flick out instead of under. Soft layers and volume that frames the features gives the shape a hint of seventies influence. See pictures of the evolution in the style notes. –– Laura Martin
