mc1r

When many of us think of a redhead, someone with fair skin and a freckled-face may come to mind––think Isla Fisher or Nicole Kidman. And while that’s a common thread, it’s not a totally accurate one. Photographer Michelle Marshall recently launched her photography project MC1R, a collective of images documenting the beautifully diverse manifestations of the recessive MC1R gene, particularly in Afro-Caribbean redheads. There’s certainly a lot of interesting science to learn behind the gene mutation but for now, I love simply admiring these striking portraits that capture every freckle and fly-away hair. exaggerated a line

Transitioning a bob into something longer and leaner for fall, this extreme A-line cut features deeply textured ends and a dramatic increase in length from back to front. Short tendrils at the front hairline and across the very top of the otherwise unbroken surface customize the shape. Combined with a vibrant hue like the deep copper shown here and the effect is elegant and contemporary. Click the style notes for tips on creating this graphic shape. –– Laura Martin

slick updo

In one way, most updos are fairly simple: start with a braid or ponytail, arrange ends into desired shape, and secure with bobby pins. It’s in the details where the problems happen. Roots end up bumpy, flyaways sprout from your hairline, or ends refuse to tuck under, and suddenly your supposedly simple style has turned into a complicated mess. The easiest solution? Add water. elizabeth moss

Elizabeth Moss is an actress everyone seems to love. She’s talented, uniquely beautiful, and has a sophisticated yet playful sense of style. She’s also one of those rare women who seems to be able to pull off any hair color from deep brown to platinum to her latest, a vibrant auburn. This copper shade gives her skin a rosy glow and adds brightness to her baby blues. Click the style notes for a copycat formula and get this gorgeous shade for yourself!

beautiful woman with long hair and comb

I love to use Sundays for hair masks. Hair masks are great but even better when you make them at home and have time to relax, making Sunday the perfect day for them. With the humidity kicking back in and temperatures going back up a minty refreshing and nourishing mask is just the thing you need. Click the notes. –– Kelly Rowe
