Highlights are probably the most popular in-salon color service because the dynamic, all-over gloss and sheen never fails to leave clients thrilled. As seen in the above pictures of Ashley Tisdale, however, low-lighting can be just as beautifying, especially in the fall/winter season. Deciding whether it’s time to go for a highlight or a lowlight can be tricky but either look can be your crowning glory this Holiday. Learn more in the notes.  Click for StyleNotes →

At the recent American Music Awards Julianne Hough brought something unexpected to the red carpet: a zigzag part. Back in the nineties, the zigzag was a favorite of celebrities ranging from Jennifer Aniston to Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown. It’s been at least a decade since its made an appearance in Hollywood, but the reactions to Hough’s style was surprisingly positive. Hollywood Life called it “insanely cool” and Fresh News Online referred to the style as “seriously sleek.” Was the turban-like effect merely the perfect compliment to Hough’s exotic beaded gown, or are zigzag parts about to become a trend? In this cool look, silver, sea foam and icy blue weave together to create a metallic shimmer. Dark roots and a tendrils of brown branching through the cool hues make the shades pop and add depth to the palette. The metallic feeling of this blend takes pastel from flirty to futuristic. It’s finally cooled down which means I can wear some of my favorite fall staples: chunky boots, fuzzy sweaters, berry lipstick, and lots of hats. While I love all hats from the fedora to the knit beanie, I definitely don’t love hat hair. But the great news for all of us is that we don’t have to suffer from bad hair days and can still rock cute hats as the temperature continues to drop. I have four great dos and dont’s on how to avoid hat hair this season and still wear your favorite topper. Click through to the notes for the details. –– Michelle Rotbart Click for StyleNotes →

Singer Ciara isn’t the first person I used to think of when it came to great style, but over the last year the 29-year-old new mom has seriously upgraded her look. From fashion deals and well-styled red carpet appearances to being a muse to Ricacardo Tisci for Givenchy, Ciara is now a fashion insider. The singer/muse is known to have fun with her hair, so when she was spotted on the red carpet at the American Music Awards with a modern updo, everyone took notice. The hair was fashioned into a clean and slick low bun with a middle part. The face-framing tendrils made the look, with the needed detail complementing her intricately beaded gown all while giving a lived-in appeal to the outfit. Bravo Ciara! I’ll definitely be watching you now. To see some my favorite looks from this style star, click through to style notes. –– Michelle Rotbart  Click for StyleNotes →
