This year’s Golden Globe styles were a bit more exciting than previous years. While glittering frocks and long lengths were a plenty, I did spot a great evening suit on Taylor Schilling and a crop top on Kate Hudson. Hair-wise, polished and primped hair worn by Lady Gaga and Cate Blanchett stole the show. Funny gals Uzo Aduba and Melissa McCarthy kept their looks lively with textured and wavy tendrils and Zoe Kazan was standout with a super-smooth, geometric bob. This was not a red carpet for shrinking violets. To see my favorite celebrity styles from the red-carpet, click through to the notes. — Michelle Rotbart Click for StyleNotes →

In January of last year I predicted the softening of bright shades from neon to grungy brights. This year I expect we’ll continue to see pastel and other fashion hues, but instead of single-color looks or rainbow effects, I think we’ll start seeing monochrome dimension. This look, spotted on the runway at Lanvin, features a blend of peach, rose gold, and soft coral, for a vibrant effect that’s dimensional and layered. The combination of colors lends a lived-in feeling and accentuates the disheveled and piece-y texture in the cut. Get the formulas and tips on application in the style notes. –– Laura Martin

Gigi rarely has a fashion misstep, but even for her this braided bun was a standout. The style, which she wore back in September (ahead of the game, as usual) epitomizes a trend I expect to see a lot of this year: classic shapes with intricate details. This look comes together in under 10 minutes, but—thanks to some careful detailing—it looks intricate and carefully constructed. It’s the perfect pairing for a streamlined ensemble like Gigi’s fitted jacket and sultry cat eye.
