Maybe it’s those pouty lips. Maybe it’s her confidence. Maybe it’s her perfect blend of softness and toughness. Whatever it is Ruby Rose, who plays Stella on Orange Is The New Black, is making edgy androgyny appeal to the masses. We’ve seen androgynous women with wide appeal before—Katherine Moennig who played Shane on The L Word comes to mind—but Ruby’s look is more aggressively standard-defying (shorter, barbed hair, lots of tattoos, little to no makeup on the show) and yet she doesn’t look “harsh” or in any way off-putting. In fact, she exudes a sexuality that feels both self-assured and approachable. Her beauty opens up possibilities for all of us; she reminds us that looking great doesn’t mean looking like everyone else. Learn more about Ruby’s inspiring style in the notes. –Laura Martin

Ruby’s cut works well because it’s such a perfect blend of crisp barbering and feminine softness. Parting the look on the left shows off the line detailing, parting it on the right makes the shape look like a pretty pixie.

Ruby’s color is a deep chocolate brown that accentuates her bright blue eyes. The natural hue doesn’t compete with the bold cut, but the deep hue emphasizes the shaved lines and undercut sections.

Ruby’s brows are perfectly shaped, but thick and strong which helps her delicate features hold up to the geometric lines of the cut.
