When contemplating the perfect hairstyle to complement your new cocktail dress, a ponytail may not be the first thing that comes to mind. You probably associate the pony with lazy Saturdays or your gym routine. But don’t underestimate this apparently simple style. With a minor adjustment or two your casual tail can transform into a glamorous party ‘do. Click the notes to find out how. –– Laura Martin

Add bubbles with thin, transparent ponytail elastics added to the middle of your tail. Gently pull hair between bands to create wide fluffy shapes or leave sleek for a subtler effect.

Make it bigger by teasing before you pull it back for a sexy, sixties vibe. Spray refinish liberally into roots, massaging with fingers to distribute. Tease crown area with a round paddle brush. Part in the center, combing back about 3” to the apex. Pull hair into a loose ponytail at the crown. Finish with fierce.

Put a bow on it by tying a wide ribbon around the base of your tail. Try with a high, tousled pony to ensure that the look has a grown-up vibe.

Wrap it in a strip of leather, ribbon, or even a section of hair. Add gel and a light mist of water to roots for a sleek low-volume finish.

Make it sparkle by spraying roots with holding spray then dusting with glitter.
