As I watched the red carpet procession at this year’s Golden Globes, I noticed a trend among the Hollywood elite, hair that looked distinctly DIY. From Olivia Wilde’s flat waves to Emilia Clarke’s half-up style, the hair was extremely simple, imprecise, even messy. These informal ‘dos were paired with glamorous, flawless makeup and the usual wardrobe regalia. Sometimes the effect was cool and effortless, others it just felt messy. Generally, I’m a fan of understated elegance, but watching the red carpet I started to wonder if we’ve taken the undone hair trend too far. Is our shabby still chic, or is just messy? Emilia Clarke’s whole ensemble was a bit strange, but the volume-less, messy, hairstyle was especially unflattering paired with her high-necked gothic gown.

Heidi Klum chose a stunning silver dress covered in swingy fringe. Keeping her hair simple was a good choice, but the rather hair simple around her face made the look feel sloppy.

Olivia Wilde pulls off her messy hair beautifully. Maybe it’s the necklace, or the simple lines of the dress, or maybe she’s just that cool.
