Great HairStyles Use Form to Flatter Through Expansion and Reduction

image-2

You may have heard hair described as an art form, but what you may not know is that the principles of design taught to painters and architects are the same ones used to create flattering cuts and updos. Line, form, shape and proportion can alter and enhance both the shape of the face and the balance of the features. A high chignon can elongate the cheekbones and chin, a geometric bob can give the illusion of a perfect jaw line. a cascade of curls can deemphasize a large nose or a pointy chin. The size and form of the frame surrounding the face is just as important as the internal outline of the shape. A few weeks ago we brought you a detailed look at the use of negative space; now we’ll look at how to use line and volume to get the most out of your ‘do. Read on for more details about getting the right silhouette and celebrity examples of the principle at work. –– Laura Martin

Beyonce Wears a Retro Beach Wave

BRUNETTE, CELEBRITY, EBONY, LONG, SEXY

BN89OrkP8Lpl

Reminiscent of the tumbling, peek-a-boo glamor wave of 1940s style icon, Veronica Lake, Beyonce wore this style for her new H&M ad campaign. Full of feminine mystique, the look benefits from the asymmetrical, short to long face-frame and the tumbling wave cascade. Beyonce’s sweeping hair and seductive gaze epitomize timeless Hollywood glamor, while the ornate accessory adds visual balance to the look. Beach waves are back in fashion for spring and summer; this style fits that modern trend, yet retains old world elegance and class –– perfect for an occasion. To create the look, the key ingredient is a consistent wave pattern. To learn how to do it, click style notes.

Trending Hair Styles: Lucille Ball Inspires the Modern Mohawk

Volume on top with sleek sides is a flattering look that elongates the face and draws attention up to the eyes. We often credit the mohawk for creating this type of proportional balance, but Lucille Ball was wearing the look long before the punk movement adopted it as their signature haircut. And after being in and out of fashion over the past decades, contemporary “mohawk” shapes now have more in common with the coifed looks of the fifties than the rebellious styles of the seventies. High, curly shapes with sleek sides are back, and whatever we call  them, they invoke both rock inspired rebellion and classic femininity. Framing the Face with the Use of Negative Space

BLONDE, BRUNETTE, CELEBRITY, EBONY, EVERYDAY, LONG, MEDIUM, MODEL, RED, SEXY, SHORT, SLEEK

space

Hair provides a casement for the features, enhancing or minimizing by creating balance or emphasis. Often, a haircut is focused on getting the right shape –– long or short, sleek or voluminous –– but just as important is the space left behind. This is what artists call “negative space.” In a haircut negative space is not empty; instead, it is the area that is given to the features. Usually, it is easy to see poor composition ––  hair hanging low over eyes shortens the face, too many strands on the cheeks is an aging effect –– whereas styles that are carefully composed often just look right. But if you know what to look for, you can understand the art form. And for a lot of people, it is simply a matter of finding the confidence to soften problem areas with diffused lines, rather than trying to hide them with bulky hair. Meanwhile, you can draw attention to your best assets by giving them the space to shine. To see celebrity examples of using negative space in good and bad ways, click style notes.  –– Laura Martin
