Men’s Style Inspiration: Surf The Waves

BLONDE, BRUNETTE, EVERYDAY, MEDIUM, MENS

Soft, natural waves are a great low maintenance option for both genders. We’ve loved women in beachy texture for the last few seasons, and now men are embracing the look. Long hair on men is making a comeback, and loose, un-styled waves provide carefree, bad-boy texture. This look is easy to achieve with the right cut and a few simple tricks. Hair Braids For Men

Just when you thought you’d seen every possible variety of braid, the look showed up the one place you didn’t expected it: on men. We’ve come to associate woven styles with weddings and flower children, but the technique comes from tough roots, and was worn by hunters and warriors long before it became associated with femininity and romance. Indigenous tribes of Africa, Native Americans, and even the Vikings wore braided styles. More recently, music stars from Willie Nelson to Dave Grohl have embraced the earthy vibe of this style. Long hair is in, and these looks provide versatile, functional options, vastly preferable to masculine ponytails. Click the style notes for tips on creating your own rugged ropes. –– Laura Martin

Trending: The Man Bun Reemerges

Last year the New York Times featured what they called the man bun. The article inspired others to muse about long hair for men; spawned a man bun tumblr; and how-to videos on youtube. Scott Schuman, of The Sartorialist, highlighted fashionable men wearing them at Pitti Uomo, a menswear trade show. Some critics hoped the trend would die, yet we continue to see strapping gentlemen striding the streets with long hair wrapped up. Dare your man do the same? A validating history lesson may be the way to make him bun. For some background, click style notes.

Trending: Classic Looks Inspiring Men’s Fashion and Grooming

“Every girl’s crazy ‘bout a sharp dressed man,” sang ZZ Top in 1983. The song emulated the zeitgeist of the times, inspiring men to pull together a classic wardrobe to impress the ladies. Fast-forward thirty years, not much has changed.

With shows like Mad Men and BoardWalk Empire influencing the social scene, modern men also have an interest in getting dressed. Forgoing the casual Friday aesthetic, hip men are leaving the polo shirts and khakis in the closet. Designer Christopher Bailey called his recent Burberry fall collection “I ♥ Classics.” The focal pieces were traditional Burberry trenches updated with graphic prints. The models, sporting hair by stylist Matt Mulhall, wore classic soft side-parts. Mulhall recommends this look for “letting people know you’re aware of sartorial traditions, but not subservient to them.” Even with its classic roots the hair is modern and easily maintained. Similar grooming was seen at the Jil Sander show. Sander’s classic, streamlined silhouettes were paired with square cut hair, and brushed forward to accentuate the jaw line. Hair stylist Guido Palau was inspired by the late 70s and called this look “very GQ.”  For more tips on achieving the classic soft side part, click through style notes.

Trending: Anticipation of Great Gatsby Film Influences Fashion and Beauty

Imagine a Gatsby-inspired life –– parties, clothes, drama, power. Celebrated in print, fashion, beauty, and film The Great Gatsby returns to the big screen for the fourth time at the 66th Canes Film Festival on May 15. Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation stars Carey Mulligan, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Toby Maguire. Catherine Martin, costume designer and wife of Baz Luhrmann, collaborated with Italian designer Miuccia Prada to create appropriate 1920s costumes for the film. Most of Cary Mulligan’s ensembles are Martin originals, while others are reworked designs from the Prada library. Martin chose to work with Prada to “recall the European flair that was emerging amongst the aristocratic East Coast crowds in the twenties.” In a design highlight, Mulligan, as Daisy Buchanan, slips into a redo of a jade and topaz crystal party dress from Prada’s Spring 2010 collection. Martin also partnered with Tiffany & Co and Brooks Brothers to dress the men. The Jazz Age’s appeal has already inspired many of the year’s popular beauty looks. The popular chin-length bob and Marcel waves of the era were imitated on several runways and sported by lots of celebrities during awards season.
