Alicia Vikander made her mark on Oscars night, not only did she win Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Danish Girl, but her modern take on evening hair on the red carpet was an all-around win. I loved the carefree half-up topknot she wore. It was an excellent finishing detail to her yellow Louis Vuitton dress and would look just as great at a brunch with friends. I can’t wait to rock this look. Thankfully you don’t have to be an award winner to wear it either. To learn how to emulate this style, click through to style notes. –– Michelle Rotbart

Step One: Start with dry hair and spray in protective thickening lotion. Then, using your wand create loose but polished waves. Spray hair with a few pulses of primp.

Step Two: Section off hair above the temple and pull hair upward and back to create a ponytail in your crown area. Secure the ponytail with an elastic hair tie.

Step Three: Gently tease the ponytail to create bulk and volume. Then coil the length into a bun shape by wrapping it around your ponytail.

Step Four: Secure bun with bobby pins.
