split color

There are always new hair color trends popping up; this one is definitely one of the more extreme. Split hair color is exactly as it sounds –– hair color that is different on one side than the other. Am I a fan? Yes and no. Click the notes for more of my take on this polarizing trend. –– Kelly Rowe

Why I like it

This gives you the chance to have color that most people will not have. You will stand out and be original. Since everyone nowadays is experimenting with unnatural shades this a chance to go above all of that and be really, really eye catching. It also takes away the problem of having to pick between two colors you love.

Why I hate this.

This trend is an impractical match for wardrobes and makeup palettes. Your clothing will never look right with one side of the color, and your makeup will never look perfect. It will always just be a little off, at least on one side. Plus, as a colorist, I can tell you this is going to be a nightmare when you try to bring it all back to one shade. You are likely to have more fading on one side than the other, and you are likely to get more damage on one side than the other too. Your hair will take a very long time to get back to equal.

Suggestions

If you want to try it, go for it. I always say don’t be afraid of hair color because in the end, it is just hair color –– worst case scenario, you cut off the bad bits and let it grow back. . . . Just know what you are getting yourself into before you go for this extreme look.
