Most hair products are named for what they do—volume foam, curl control, hydro mist—which should make picking the right ones easy. But sometimes the best product for a particular task is the one that’s named for the opposite texture. From my favorite collection of ARROJO Products, for example, curl control’s moisture and hold are a dream for straightening; volume foam has great grip for smoothing. Confused? Learn to see past the labels, and get your best styling results ever, in the notes. –– Laura Martin
Tip #1: Think About Strength. It takes a lot of power to defy gravity, so volumizing products tend to have some serious hold. This makes them great for smoothing out frizz and holding curls as well as adding height.
Tip #2: Consider Moisture. Products designed for curls tend to have moisturizing agents and shine benefits, which makes them ideal for creating smooth, glossy blowouts too! Remember: Heat lets you manipulate the hair; product lets you control the direction you want to go.
Tip #3: Finish It Off. Whether you want your look to be matte and piecey or glossy and seamless, when it comes to finishing products think about the surface texture. That may mean adding firm hold hairspray to beachy waves, or cream wax to hollywood curls; don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
