Hats are essential cold weather wear for those with cropped cuts. Short hair traps less heat than longer tresses and leaves your neck exposed to the chill, but wearing a cap with a short cut can leave you looking bald, or result in some serious hat hair. After years of experimentation I’ve finally perfect the art of wearing hats over short hair. Learn to stay warm and stylish in the notes. –– Laura Martin

Step: After showering, scrunch a handful of volume foam into roots and style hair as usual, if it comes out a little puffy, that’s fine. Mist with holding spray and allow to rest for 5 minutes.

Step: Drop chin to chest so hair falls forward around the face. Pull beanie carefully over crown, leaving some looseness in the top of the hat.

Step: Flip hair back and arrange around the edge of the cap. When you are ready to remove the hat, flip head upside down and carefully slide cap off. Massage roots with fingers and flip back up.
