This spring, the beret is making a comeback. It’s not hard to see why—francophile style is all the rage—but it is a little hard to see how. Berets have become such a stereotypical indicator of French-ness that we now associate them with Pepe Le Pew. Berets are also associated with beatniks, jazz musicians, and Che Guevara. Thats a lot of connections and they can make this particular topper feel a little costume-y. How do you make this historic accessory feel contemporary? Click the notes to find out. –– Laura Martin
Do keep makeup minimal and hair soft and textured (wavy, curly, or tousled) to keep the look casual.
Don’t pair your beret with a turtle neck. You’ll end up looking like a cartoon beatnik.
Do pair your beret with soft florals or sweaters, they will keep the low feminine and pretty.
Don’t wear a cat eye or heavy liner with this hat. It’s too much.
Do try a bright red lip for a playful pop of brightness.
