For years we’ve been hearing that cool girls wear their hair tousled, ruffled and rumpled. We’ve embraced bedhead, beachy waves, and messy updos. But let’s be honest, it takes a lot of work to look artfully unkempt and well, if you’re going to invest time your style, is it really so horrible that that effort should show? Slowly but surely, coifed hair is making a comeback. From glossy straight looks to refined updos, looking like you tried is shaking off its taboo. Get steps for refining your look in the notes. –– Laura Martin
Step: Add a glossy sheen with shine spray, misting on ends after heat styling. Brush through to distribute without fear of oily-looking roots. Great for finishing smooth strands or as prep for polished updos.
Step: Add finesse to updos by backcombing hair lightly before styling. This will add height at the roots and bind the hair into a unified fabric. Brush out the top surface slights and style as desired.
Step: Reconnect with hair spray to keep your polished style looking fresh and neat all day. Primp is a light, workable choice for styles that don’t need a lot of hold. Fierce will lock your look in place without feeling stiff or sticky.
