Redheads face challenges with wardrobe and makeup. Blondes and brunettes rarely think about their locks when coordinating outfits, but the copper-haired know their strands are a permanent part of their palette. Some of this knowledge comes from experience; the first time I went red I had to trash a favorite mauve top. But red hair also comes with rules, often spouted by well-meaning friends and beauty professionals. One of the oldest and most familiar edicts is to avoid wearing red, especially on the lips. But like many tired axioms, this one is made to be broken. Emma Stone, Christina Hendricks, and Florence Welch rock the look, and you can too. Find out how in the style notes. –– Laura Martin
Step: Pick a color on the same side of the spectrum. If your hair is copper, go for coral or scarlet. If you have burgundy locks, try a cherry or plum tone.
Step: Keep the rest of your makeup palette simple. Use neutral shades and keep eye makeup to a minimum. This will balance the bold hues of your locks and lips.
Step: Balance your palette by wearing neutral clothing to avoid an overly bright look. A little black dress or a nude sheath provide the perfect backdrop.
