Few shows capture 1990s teenage angst better than “My So Called Life.” The hair, the clothing, the attitudes, everything was very much a product of its time. There’s lots of ninety’s influence in today’s fashion, and lots to love from this ground-breaking series. Rayanne’s clip braids and messy updos, Angela’s Deep red hue and classic lob, and Jordan Catalano’s grungy long cut provide plenty of possibilities. Claire Danes put knickers in a twist when she arrived at this year’s Emmys dressed in a newly ‘bobbed’ hair cut –– or so we thought. It’s actually a piece of very clever hairstyling. The locks have been delicately and elegantly curled under her chin with pins used to set the style in place, and a swooshing, curvaceous side-part used to frame her features. Recreating this at home is easier than you think, especially if the style need only hold up for a few hours. If you’ve long hair and fancy a faux bob change-up, click style notes.  Click for StyleNotes →

This collar length layer, swept off the face, creates an illusion of extra volume and fullness. A great fit for Claire as her hair is quite fine and wispy. It looks soft and carefree, yet with structure and strength. A modern style perfect for those whose hair fails to hold its shape throughout the day because the way the layers are cut means the hair will not flop. The face-framing, multi-dimensional highlight is lighter than the natural color and also serves the illusion of volume.

Many of us watched the Emmy’s last night and while most were anticipating the award results, we were really paying attention to the hair. Our favorite look was the maxi dress and cascading curls combination that some of our favorite starlets wore. Gretchen Mol and Claire Danes chose an elegant deep side part while Heidi Klum and Christina Hendricks opted for off center parts.
