Once a runway for jaw-dropping femininity and daring Hollywood looks, the red carpet is transforming into more of street-style spectacle, especially for hair.  Case in point, the 2017 SAG Awards.  Noticeably absent were the hair-sprayed tresses and the over-the-top up-dos seen many times before at red-carpet events.  This time, there was a new look in town: The undone, street-inspired natural and wavy textures that are already ruling 2017. Chrissy Teigen, Brie Larson and Natalie Portman were just a few of the stars rocking natural tresses in a pinned-up or down style with perfectly imperfect presentation.  See below for more of my favorite SAG hair looks. –– Brittany Weiner

In case you haven’t noticed, half-up topknots have been practically everywhere the last few months, on the heads of models and all over Instagram. And there are plenty of reasons to embrace this look, it’s perfect for days your hair is too messy or even too dirty too wear down, but you don’t really want to hide all of it. And depending on your style, you can either wear it casual or dressed up. Personally I love it when the look has a little more attitude, which is why I love adding the French braid detail to it. And you don’t even need much time to execute it. Click through to the notes to learn how to emulate this style. –– Michelle Rotbart Click for StyleNotes →

A couture show, like an art exhibition, is a display of aesthetic delights. The looks are about design, not wearability. But occasionally there are gems that can cross over into street wear, with a little adaptation. The hairstyle from Chanel’s recent couture show was just such a look. The combination of sleek roots and an oversized chignon made for a style that felt both retro and modern. The look, says stylist Sam McKnight, was inspire by a Picasso sculpture but it’s drawn comparisons to everything from a croissant to Princess Leia. Last week we learned that the it look for fall is an updo. And this weekend proved that a definite do, for functional and fashionable reasons. With the windy-days upon us I think we’ll all want to start putting our hair up to keep it out of our faces and out of our way. There are many variations on classic chignons but I’m really into a new and modern twisted version. It looks elaborate but is easy to create. Try it for work or for your next date, you won’t go wrong. Click through the notes to get the know-how. –– Michelle Rotbart Click for StyleNotes →

Prom is a formal event for young girls who don’t know much about being formal. Often, this means an odd pairing of trendy clothes with stuffy hairstyles. The looks pictured here are dressy, but not too rigid. They’re perfect for a special occasion, but convey a youthful, easy feeling. Get step-by-step instructions for all four looks in the style notes. –– Laura Martin
