This look combines two big trends for the coming year: curls and bangs. Thick fringe is often paired with curly hairstyles, but usually the bangs themselves are straightened, providing contrast to the loose shape of the coils. Wearing bangs curly gives them a softer, quirky feeling that is more flattering on strong features than a blunt, straight edge. The trick to this style is achieving the right balance between control and organic movement; learn how in the style notes. –– Laura Martin Click for StyleNotes →

Nowadays there are salons that only cut curly locks, which suggests dealing with texture is a separate skill. It’s not. It just requires a refined approach. When styling, for example, it’s better to dry with a diffuser than a blow-dryer because blowing curly hair all about is likely to break the curls and create frizz; a diffuser on the other hand, dries with heat but no air, which helps curls expand and form beautifully. No longer are we bound to the poker-straight styles that were so popular just a decade or so ago. These days, natural texture is the way to go. bangs and waves

Beachy waves are easygoing and feminine, a perfect go-to style. But loose undulations don’t offer much in terms of structure. A blunt bang is their perfect counterpoint. Wear this style with the wide athletic headbands that were rampant on Spring 2016 runways or add some whimsy with an oversized clip. This cut stands on its own but the clean lines also form the perfect backdrop for creative styling. Learn more about the shape in the notes. –– Laura Martin

mens hair

For inspiring men’s haircuts there are few better places to look than the soccer fields of Europe. As a Manchester United fan, I’m particularly interested in the British players; their hairstyles show a surprising variety from Maroune Fellaini’s ample afro to Oliver Giroud’s polished swoosh.
