red hair

It appears that designers just can’t get enough of auburn haired models. Louis Vuitton kicked it off with the pre-summer collections with a total of six redheads on the runway. Following suit, Gucci also cast eight redheads for its show. And now I’m seeing autumn/ winter ’15 campaigns from Dior, Zara TRF and Celine and MSMG full of models with copper locks. The reason for all the infatuation with red? Amber hair play with autumn palettes, many influenced by the 1970s. Ready to try on the season’s hottest color? Lately the softer side of red has trended toward rosy hues: strawberry blonde, apricot, and rose gold. This is the warmer, earthier side of titian, a spicy copper gold redolent of cumin and turmeric. Try it on it’s own as shown in the two pictures on the right, or use it to add sunny hand painted highlights as pictured on the left. Paprika gives food an earthy sweet flavor that feels warm and bright. It’s great sprinkled over just about any savory dish; its mild flavor enhances and adds complexity without taking over. Soft copper provides a similar effect on most skin tones, adding a rosy glow that’s flattering but not attention grabbing. Add this hue to blonde and light brown shades for a lovely season update. The natural look is in for the fall, and with it a much more minimal approach to beauty. The trendiest hair colors this season are soft shades that mimic nature. Not just “natural” colors, but tones and applications that actually look like you were born with them. Subdued tones and subtle variation are the key to achieving this look. This lovely soft copper is a like strawberry blonde except richer, with a bright, spicy feeling. The hue is a mixture of gold, taupe and warm red hues, blended in a demi-permanent formula that gives a perfect wash of warmth to medium and light hair colors. Apply it over a solid base for natural-looking gloss, or use over highlights for vibrant dimension. Read on for the formula and tips on application. –– Laura Martin
