This dark violet shade with it’s dappled surface recalls the hue of wild muscadine grapes which grow profusely over the Southeast in summertime. Subdued vibrancy is a big trend this fall. Deep purples, soft rose golds, and dusty pink-blondes take the rainbow hair trend in a more wearable direction. From a distance this shade would appear black, the violet operating more as a reflection than a primary hue. Every fall I become obsessed with red-violet hues. There’s just something so rich, so dramatic about a deep, plummy red. I’ve posted formulas for vibrant magentas and soft mahoganies, but this color is neither brownish nor jewel-toned. Understated but un-muddied, this concentrated tone reminds me of syrupy jam, rich, vibrant, and natural. Find the formula and application tips in the notes. ––  Laura Martin Click for StyleNotes →

This perfect red is smokey and sweet like its namesake spice. Wisps of lightness accentuate the vibrant shade like a sprinkling of salt over a flavorful dish. By painting the bright bits on top of the processing color, you’ll get a soft blended finish and keep the processing time to a minimum. Rich chocolate brown layered with warm caramel and pale walnut form a decadent color palette as tempting as dessert. Layering the colors along steep diagonals creates a swirling blend of hues that’s melty, not stripy. This color works well on a variety of layered shapes, both long and short. This gold is so soft and warm it’s almost copper. It reminds me of late afternoon summer light, the color the world glows with just before sunset. Few hues feel more quintessentially summery than worm gold. pair it with makeup-free skin and a coral lips and you’ll glow with youth and vitality.
