fabric hair tie

There are countless articles on creating the perfect ponytail and all of them have one thing in common: elastic hair bands. Elastic has many advantages. It stretches to conform to different thicknesses. It has a firm grip and doesn’t slide over the course of the day. It feels secure and works well as a base for pinning and clipping. But it’s also tough on your hair. I’m not saying that you should throw out your ponytail holders; they have a time and place (complicated updos, extra-high styles). But for a simple low bun or ponytail they’re not necessary, and using a bit of fabric will give you a more stylish look that’s easier on your strands. Learn how in the style notes. –– Laura Martin

beach hair

It’s that time of the year where the weather is warming up and trips to the beach may be on your horizon. Nickelodeon’s Kid’s Choice Awards gives young Hollywood a chance to practice their poses before heading off to the big time. On form last night, Zendaya Coleman in a frisky spring outfit and trend-triggering hairdo. Although the bob is the talk of the town, fashion’s undercurrent –– evidenced in editorials, ad campaigns and look books –– is drifting towards mod-inspired bowl cuts. Similar to a bob, but longer and rounded through the back, and usually paired with deliciously deep-set bangs, this retro look is modern again. Zendaya created her style with a wig, yet anyone with some length can cut their own hair into this shape for spring. Learn more in the notes.

A few years ago, beauty-industry trade shows were aflutter with long feather extensions, a trend that quickly fell out of fashion. Since then feathers have been relegated to costume wear, but now they’re making a comeback. At Marchesa’s Spring/Summer 2014 show, the models wore thin tufts of navy plumage; we saw feather’s at Vivienne Westwood’s Fall/Winter 2014/2015 in Paris; and, at the same show, Ohne Titel featured updos crowned with painted on feathers. Then, Shailene Woodley wore a cluster of quills in her updo for the Insurgent premiere, translating the look from runway to red carpet.
