In the city that never sleeps, there is a renaissance of that much-loved old neighborhood standby: the barbershop. Authentic-looking barbershops –– done up with antique fixtures and fittings, vintage barbering chairs, and a bottle of bourbon on the counter –– are popping up all over the five boroughs, ushering in, with a Johnny Cash soundtrack, a new era of gentlemanly fashions. Men’s Fashion Week In New York, wrapped just last week. There was a plethora of excellent wears on the runway, but as any stylish New York knows, it’s not just what’s on the catwalk that is worth keeping an eye on. The real trends are what the the stylish tribes on the streets are rocking. And in New York City that was a great mixture of great toppers, natural and rumpled waves, and some amazing curls and fros. This is a great time to catch on to what will be trending for the next season in men’s hair! Click through the notes to see some of my favorite looks. –– Michelle Rotbart  Click for StyleNotes →

The time may soon come when we talk about fashion without gender labels, when trends will no longer be divided between men and women. Color-trend forecaster Pantone has already done away with a gendered system, providing a seasonal palette that works for both sexes. Hair and beauty looks still show a definite divide, but the lines are softening. We’re seeing more women in buzz cuts and more men with dyed strands. For the coming year blonde hues, detailed fringes, and diffused textures are taking mens looks into softer territory. Click the notes to learn more. –– Laura Martin  Click for StyleNotes →
