What makes J-Law sexy is that she doesn’t give a damn. Here she is at the LA premiere  of the final and most anticipated installment of her money-spinning franchise, so one might think she’d put her hair up, or at least blow it out and make it shiny. But The Law’s having none of it. Instead, she wears a gritty air-dried natural texture bob that sings the insouciant song of the easygoing siren. To some extent, fashion has always reflected economic and cultural disparity. In ancient Rome only noble women dyed their hair red while poor women wore theirs dark. In the middle ages the wealthy wore towering headdresses while commoners kept their tresses covered with wimples or wore them in simple braids. But for the last century or so hair trends have equalized a bit. In the twenties, women both rich and poor wore swing bobs; In the sixties, everyone was teasing and spraying to create the beehive. But lately the media has been giving a lot of coverage to looks that are hard to pull off at a conservative nine-to-five. Trends like rainbow hair, undercuts, and big, wild texture don’t work at the office. Is Capital fashion a fantasy or our future? Click the style notes to learn more. ––  Laura Martin

mockingjay

Teasers for Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 are rolling out ahead of the November release of the final installment of the blockbusting franchise. In a blood-red full body suit with matching arrows, and sitting on a majestic ivory throne, Jen’s as beautiful as she is tough. We love her fine fishtail braid. A contrast to the blowsy braid worn when we first met Katniss, it symbolizes her growth from poor peasant girl to the leader of the Panem world.  See more of Katniss’s best looks in the notes.

The latest The Hunger Games flick brought Jennifer Lawrence back to the red carpet this week. Wearing a Dior dress, holding a Roger Vivier clutch, and standing in Aquazzura sandals she could hardly be a more glamorous Capital Darling. Put into a simple bobby-pinned twist with center-parted strands, her romantic updo exposes her delicate neck while the artfully undone face-framing fringe spotlights her piercing blue eyes and impossibly alluring features. We can’t give you her genes or her wardrobe, but the hairdo is simple to recreate. Click notes for tips.
