The Oscars are fairly conservative in regards to hair and makeup, which allows the gowns to shine. Unlike fashion week, most of the styles seen at award shows are wearable in real life. It’s a good place to get a sense of the trends for the coming year. Many of the styles confirmed established trends: beach waves (seen on Margot Robbie and Kate Winslet), old Hollywood glamour (on Lady Gaga and Emily Blunt) and pretty ponytails (on Amy Adams and Sofia Varagara). But there were also some surprises that signaled exciting things to come. Brie Larson’s embellished half up style, Rooney Mara’s sleek twisted updo and Rachel McAdams wet-look pleat were standouts. A style made famous by the film stars of the forties, glamorous waves combined with a stylistic part is a classic style that remains a sexy and sophisticated red carpet look. The face-framing asymmetry and the cascading waves and curls will never go out of fashion because it is a naturally beautifying style. In days gone by this look would have been created with a roller set; nowadays, though, instead of having to set hair over several hours, or even overnight, you can use hot-tools to make this look as quick as a flash. This year’s Golden Globe styles were a bit more exciting than previous years. While glittering frocks and long lengths were a plenty, I did spot a great evening suit on Taylor Schilling and a crop top on Kate Hudson. Hair-wise, polished and primped hair worn by Lady Gaga and Cate Blanchett stole the show. Funny gals Uzo Aduba and Melissa McCarthy kept their looks lively with textured and wavy tendrils and Zoe Kazan was standout with a super-smooth, geometric bob. This was not a red carpet for shrinking violets. To see my favorite celebrity styles from the red-carpet, click through to the notes. – Michelle RotbartClick for StyleNotes →
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta –– Lady Gaga to the layman –– is the latest celebrity to take on a bob-length, choosing to premiere her freshly shorn locks on Instagram. She also revealed a new raven color that complements her complexion and eye color, rather than creating sharp contrast, as she does when she wears a blonde wig. She captioned the post with “Love my new haircut!” so perhaps the pop star is enjoying reinventing herself as a subtle vaudevillian. If you fancy a copycat look, get tips in the notes.
