When weather gets steamy, the perfect cut is one that looks great without a lot of effort. Collar-bone length, loose layers to enhance natural wave, and blunt bangs combine to form this season’s hottest shape. The style is long enough to pull into a ponytail on days when the temperature prohibits hair on your neck, but short and light enough to allow you to wear it loose even in steamy weather. Tousle in some wave mist and cream whip and you’ll look great all season long without sweating with your hairdryer. I’m not a huge TV watcher, but every once in a while I’ll start watching a show and become completely obsessed. The positive attributes of The Good Wife are too numerous to do any justice to in a singe post, so let me just talk about the hair, specifically Alicia’s hair. Julianna Margulies, the actor who plays Alicia Florrick has thick curly hair, so her character on the show wears wigs; every season she gets a new one. It would be tempting when working with hair pieces to go the extremes, picking radically different cuts or colors each season, but what the show’s stylists have done is much smarter. They’ve gradually evolved her hair in ways that relate to the development of her character. Click the notes to learn about the look from each season. ––  Laura Martin Click for StyleNotes →

When we talk about fashion icons we often mention those with a classical style, but edgy girls need inspiration too. Edie Campbell is young, but she’s already made an impact and her hair has been a huge part of her success. Her first major transformation from a flaxen one-length cut with bangs to an ebony shag debuted on the cover of Vogue. She wears styles that other girls fear – bowls, mullets – and she makes them look sexy and glamorous. Her most recent style is a jet bob-length crop with some very unusual details. Grown-out, eye-grazing bangs are one of this season’s biggest trends, but what do you pair them with? This question can be especially challenging if you’re wearing a bob or lob—which is highly probable considering their current popularity. This shape is your solution. It has enough layers to transform your blunt cut into something fresh while making your bangs feel like part of a complete look instead of a tacked-on accessory.
