Fashion month is in full swing in New York City and I’m predicting there will be an assortment of changes in fashion and beauty. One thing that’s staying the same? Enviable, looks-complicated-but-isn’t hairstyles. I’ve seen braids and ponytails come and go and have loved most, but I’ve always held on to the knotted ponytail. It’s an easy update to the classic ponytail and requires no hot tools or braiding skills. A win all around. So even if you don’t know what will be in next season quite yet, this look transcends time. I love undone and messy waves. They’re a great visual cue for telling the world “I’m the Parisian girlfriend of a rock star and I like to lounge along the Champs-Élysées, looking cool. If I can’t be bothered with that, see me by the beach as a laid back surfer chick.” Ah, The Life!  Perfectly imperfect bobs may make you think of the new global glitterati effortlessly sauntering towards their next ridiculously perfect Instagram photo but don’t be fooled, it takes work to look as easy-breezy as this.  So if you’re jonesing for the perfectly imperfect wave, click through to the notes to learn the steps it take to look so cool. –– Michelle Rotbart

Sometimes watching beauty campaigns just makes you feel like you need to buy lots of products, but every once in a while someone will make an add that actually feels empowering. The video above, part of the Dove “Love Your Hair” campaign, is all about wearing your hair the way that feels most comfortable to you, instead of letting other people tell you how you should look. It’s a great message. Click through to the notes for other beauty campaigns that will give you a boost. –– Laura Martin

As a hairdresser of over fifteen years, I feel like my favorite hairstyle should be something technically impressive and sophisticated: a classic French twist, intricate basket weave, or perfectly executed finger wave. But the truth is, in my mind, no style holds a candle to the simple allure of a pair of pigtails. They keep hair close to my face, which feels like I’m wearing it down, but also controlled like I’m wearing it up. When I was a little girl, this style allowed me to admire my favorite baubled hair bands. Now, pigtails are my solution to weird bedhead, disguising flat roots, and giving curls an extra day of wear.  I simple can’t get enough. This image is taken from the Holographic collection by Ashley Kowalsky and Zach Norman. As a creative hair color technique, Holographic blends the trendsetting art of hair painting with the vanguard art of air brushing, which uses compressed air to apply color in tailored gradients, creating light intensity and illumination that drifts with the shape of the style. The technique enables creative color creations and placements, exemplified by this long length featuring ribbons of blue, red and yellow. Steal this look in the notes.  Click for StyleNotes →
