In the sixteenth century Queen Elizabeth I took control of the English throne, changing the medieval perception of red hair from a sign of barbarism to a sigil of power. Her red hair was so popular that her courtier’s died their beards a matching hue. In the centuries since her reign many other powerful women have embraced the bold hue. Famously independent film star Katherine Hepburn was a redhead. Red hair was the color of choice for the spunky TV star Lucille Ball. It was worn by Shirley McClain, Carol Burnette, Susan Sarandon, and Molly Ringwald. Comedian Sarah Rue has red hair. Singers Tori Amos and Florence Welch wear vibrant shades of scarlet. Why have so many powerful women embraced this dynamic shade? Click the notes for my take. ––  Laura Martin Click for StyleNotes →
