In case you missed it, last night was the biggest night of award season: the Oscars. And while most eyes were checking out the dresses, I was all about the hair and faces. An actress’s beauty look carries equal if not more importance to her outfit, as it’s the finishing touch that can make her unforgettable. There were many inspired styles on the night; my favorite’s include Jennifer Lawrence wearing her scintillating blonde casually down, Olivia Wilde’s side-parted braid bun, and Daisy Ridley’s intricate updo. I recommend pulling these looks into your files to use as inspiration for your next fancy event. To see more of my favorites, click through to style notes. –– Michelle Rotbart Click for StyleNotes →

In contrast to the sleek entwines on the runways at New York Fashion Week, Olivia Wilde’s plait is anything but polished. Wavy texture, loose and loopy with lots of free-falling strands, this look is the epitome of lived-in. But for all its casualness, the prettiness here, combined with a few smart details—shine, a side part, and ends fluffed into a teardrop—make for a romantic look that’s sexy, not slovenly. As I watched the red carpet procession at this year’s Golden Globes, I noticed a trend among the Hollywood elite, hair that looked distinctly DIY. From Olivia Wilde’s flat waves to Emilia Clarke’s half-up style, the hair was extremely simple, imprecise, even messy. These informal ‘dos were paired with glamorous, flawless makeup and the usual wardrobe regalia. Sometimes the effect was cool and effortless, others it just felt messy. Generally, I’m a fan of understated elegance, but watching the red carpet I started to wonder if we’ve taken the undone hair trend too far. Is our shabby still chic, or is just messy? If you’re having a wonky hair day, there is no better way to remedy a subprime hair situation that with a loosely woven plait. Just take note from it-girl Oliva Wilde, who was seen at LAX with her long tendrils crafted into a loose, romantic side braid and tucked under a floppy ‘70s inspired topper. It’s a denim-friendly style that only benefits from texture and looks better with wispy face framing pieces, making it the perfect upgrade for long flights or lazy Sunday brunches.
