This year we’ve seen an abundance of new hair terminology. Some of these terms correspond with fresh techniques while others are existing styles repackaged. Some are hybrid words (like lob and bronde), others stolen from the art world (painting) and others are purely invention (plopping). This season’s hair coloration is coming from an unexpected place of inspiration: your grandmother’s jewelry box. After a long summer of colorombré and granny hair, opal is coming on to the scene. Celebrity colorist Aura Friedman has been promoting this look heavily on social media. According to Aura, “cooler tones tend to give you a metallic shine and when you’re using ashy tones, right before you get gray, you get a pearl.” In other words, don’t try this look out at home. Keep in mind, this isn’t going to be an easy shade to maintain, it’s going to take a lot of curated care and frequent salon visits. But if you want to stand out this season, it’s certainly a look to go for. Click through to styles notes for more inspiration. –– Michelle Rotbart
