I’m not sure if we owe the revival of the choker to 90s revival or Melisandre from Game of Thrones, but this accessory is back with a vengeance. Worn over a scarf with the hair tucked in, it creates a cinched, belt-like effect that’s reminiscent of pigtails, but looser and sexier. We saw this look on Dior’s Spring/Summer 2016 runway; let’s take it to the street. Learn how below. ––  Laura Martin

Is it summer yet? Because I’m ready to bypass spring and pull out my cut off denim and start wearing bohemian-inspired braids. For me the ideal look is part free-spirited and part mis-shapen, a perfect style for laid-back off duty days or even a glamorous event if you know how to work it. Lucky for all of us, I spotted the quintessential braid while perusing a magazine. It’s braided, looped, pinched, and super easy to emulate. Pull out your hair ties and get ready to stroll down memory lane ladies, because your signature childhood hairstyle, pigtails, are back in vogue. The look, a staple amongst four-year-olds and cheerleaders made several appearances throughout the last few weeks of fashion month. It girls like Karlie Kloss, Lexi Boling, and Kim Kardashian West were seen wearing modern versions on the street. And models at Creatures of the Wind rocked tightly slicked plaits that started at the crown. Though I even spotted little Harper Beckham and North West wearing this look, it’s not just for children any more. Just last week I wrote about my lifelong love of pigtails, and then days later I start seeing braided pigtails all over the runway. I’m thrilled this look is back in fashion, but I’m even more excited that the stylists for Creatures of The Wind, Sally Lapointe, and Baja East have come up with fresh, whimsical variations of this simple style. Best of all, these three looks are easy to recreate at home. Click the notes to learn more about each one. ––  Laura Martin Click for StyleNotes →

As a hairdresser of over fifteen years, I feel like my favorite hairstyle should be something technically impressive and sophisticated: a classic French twist, intricate basket weave, or perfectly executed finger wave. But the truth is, in my mind, no style holds a candle to the simple allure of a pair of pigtails. They keep hair close to my face, which feels like I’m wearing it down, but also controlled like I’m wearing it up. When I was a little girl, this style allowed me to admire my favorite baubled hair bands. Now, pigtails are my solution to weird bedhead, disguising flat roots, and giving curls an extra day of wear.  I simple can’t get enough.
