Shared with us by Peggie Huang, stylist at ARROJO Studio SoHo, we love both the artistry of this chunky plait on the bias, and the way the tail of the braid has been fanned out into wonderfully nonchalant wisps. Peggie was also kind enough to share her steps to creating this eye-catching look. When it comes to color trends, brunettes can sometimes feel left out. Their hue isn’t as flashy as red or blonde, but it is precisely because of its subtlety that brown hair is such a great place for creativity. Brown is made by mixing the three primary colors—red, yellow, and blue—and varying the proportions creates a nearly infinite variety of tones. The color shown above—on the lovely Jessica Biel—has a high proportion of warmth, which gives it a golden-red shine that’s softened with an ashy overlay. Bits of paler honey woven through provide extra shimmer. Get the formulas and tips on application in the notes. –– Laura Martin Click for StyleNotes →

Cool dark roots brushed with soft citric brightness creates a light, refreshing palate that feels clean and natural like a glass of bitter tea balances with a slice of lemon. The combination of warm brown and cool blonde highlights is fairly common, but inverting the tonal direction of the hues creates a fresh, unexpected blend that will give a little warmth to your sun-deprived skin.
