carey mulligan met gala

I had the special opportunity to attend a preview of China: Through the Looking Glass, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute yesterday. With its 140-plus-piece collection of ready-to-wear, haute couture, traditional Chinese arts and textiles, and films on display, the exhibition is truly spectacular. Paralleling the glamor of the exhibit was the celebrity crowd on the red carpet leading up to The Met Gala last night. It’s great to see true beauty on the red carpet––we certainly need to celebrate something. There were lots of great styles on the scene, everything from polished updos to flowing locks, and even some crazy headware ( I’m talking about you Sarah Jessica Parker). face shapes alex

There’s more to a great hair cut than matching the shape of the style with the shape of your face. Your texture, density, hair lines, and growth patterns are as important, while the hairdressers’ artistic eye may perceive something you do not, like eyes so pretty they deserve a swooping bang or a neck so delicate that is has to be exposed. But these professional considerations aren’t for the layperson; finding face shapes that are similar to your own, and the styles that suit them, is a better use of your time. So we asked Alex Efstratiou, stylist at ARROJO NYC, to use well-known celebrities to help us understand the correlation between face shape and hair style. Catch her thoughts on the celebs in the collage above in the notes.

When were looking for a new hairstyle that will be our ‘most flattering ever ‘do’ we often prefer to search out latest trends instead of thinking more about our face shape and what will suit it best. While the shape of your face isn’t the only determining factor––hair type and lifestyle also have a big influence––choosing a cut that fits and complements your features is the first step in the direction of great hair style.
