The fashion crowed is Down Under this week at Sydney’s Resort 2017 shows. A highlight reel of Gucci’s clashing prints, souvenir jackets, and cool new takes on denim are ruling the sidewalk. Of course we know that every outfit is actually made with a great topping of crowning glory. This is one of my favorite opportunities to check out emerging hair trends. Thus far I’ve seen amazing fringe and waves on model Annabella Barber and some fabulous turbans and hats on stylist Catherine Baba. Undone waves and wonderful toppers for the season? I’ll take it. This spring, the beret is making a comeback. It’s not hard to see why—francophile style is all the rage—but it is a little hard to see how. Berets have become such a stereotypical indicator of French-ness that we now associate them with Pepe Le Pew. Berets are also associated with beatniks, jazz musicians, and Che Guevara. Thats a lot of connections and they can make this particular topper feel a little costume-y. How do you make this historic accessory feel contemporary? met gala flowers

Ah the Met Gala, a celebrity gal’s chance to play dress up. This year gala’s theme “China: Through the Looking Glass” inspired bold lips, winged eyeliner, and hairstyles adorned with flowers. Chrissy Teigen and Selena Gomez added some Asian influence with exotic orchids. Diane Kruger and Georgia May Jagger chose sprays of smaller blooms to accent their looks. Blossoms of all sizes bring fresh beauty to spring hairstyles. Click the style notes for tips on getting the look. –– Laura Martin
