This spring, the beret is making a comeback. It’s not hard to see why—francophile style is all the rage—but it is a little hard to see how. Berets have become such a stereotypical indicator of French-ness that we now associate them with Pepe Le Pew. Berets are also associated with beatniks, jazz musicians, and Che Guevara. Thats a lot of connections and they can make this particular topper feel a little costume-y. How do you make this historic accessory feel contemporary? polished bedhead

You can be the judge, but I think that Beyonce’s Flawless is an ode to bedhead. There is nothing more perfectly imperfect than messy, tousled, morning “I woke up like this” hair. And while I’d love for you to rock this look all the time, sometimes it needs to be just a bit more polished…you know for morning meetings and coffee with the parents. Yes, sometimes even the classic cool girl bedhead texture requires a blow dryer and a round brush, but don’t worry, you still get to mess it up. Short layers and choppy bangs transform chin-length looks from demure to daring. Disconnected lengths—short on top and longer underneath—have a bold, punk-influenced feel. The top layers removes bulk from the sides and can be worn sleek, tousled, or even spiked into a mohawk. The shape opens up the face, accentuating the eyes and cheekbones for a flattering, edgy variation on the bob. Learn what to ask for and how to rock it in the style notes. –– Laura Martin

penelope-cruz-esquire-november-2014-01

As we perused these pictures of Penelope Cruz, we couldn’t help but notice all the texture in her hair! Tumbling cascades of wave and curl is one of our favorite styles, while texture has been a simmering trend for several years now, without ever reaching the stratosphere. But with the Spanish star now crowned the sexiest woman alive (by Esquire), and tossing her tresses negligently around with artful tousle, perhaps it’s time for texture to take off? If it’s something you’d like to try, we recommend American Wave. Otherwise, feel the full force of Penelope’s passion in the style notes.
