blunt

There are few cuts I love more than the one length, blunt cut. While this can be a striking style it can also be a disaster. What determines which way this style goes relies completely on the way the hair is cut because not all one length styles were created equal. Click the notes for more. –– Kelly Rowe

rubyrose

Maybe it’s those pouty lips. Maybe it’s her confidence. Maybe it’s her perfect blend of softness and toughness. Whatever it is Ruby Rose, who plays Stella on Orange Is The New Black, is making edgy androgyny appeal to the masses. We’ve seen androgynous women with wide appeal before—Katherine Moennig who played Shane on The L Word comes to mind—but Ruby’s look is more aggressively standard-defying (shorter, barbed hair, lots of tattoos, little to no makeup on the show) and yet she doesn’t look “harsh” or in any way off-putting. In fact, she exudes a sexuality that feels both self-assured and approachable. Her beauty opens up possibilities for all of us; she reminds us that looking great doesn’t mean looking like everyone else. Learn more about Ruby’s inspiring style in the notes. –Laura Martin

Nickelodeon’s Kid’s Choice Awards gives young Hollywood a chance to practice their poses before heading off to the big time. On form last night, Zendaya Coleman in a frisky spring outfit and trend-triggering hairdo. Although the bob is the talk of the town, fashion’s undercurrent –– evidenced in editorials, ad campaigns and look books –– is drifting towards mod-inspired bowl cuts. Similar to a bob, but longer and rounded through the back, and usually paired with deliciously deep-set bangs, this retro look is modern again. Zendaya created her style with a wig, yet anyone with some length can cut their own hair into this shape for spring. Learn more in the notes.

The word undercut usually calls to mind extreme contrast and punk influence, but not all undercut styles are edgy statements. Recently, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, and Malin Akerman have debuted short shapes that show a different side of the undercut, a more glamorous, tailored side. These cuts aren’t conservative, but but they use contrasting lengths to create versatile, feminine, lean silhouettes. Learn more about getting the look in the style notes. –– Laura Martin
