gelled
When I think of gelled hair all I can think about is my 90s looks of crunchy gel waves and curls that I thought were amazing. They don’t look so amazing anymore but Gel is still a great product to have in your arsenal to create modern, chic, and fashion forward styles. It’s all about using it sparingly and in the right way. A touch of gel adds just the right amount contemporary feel to lots of looks. So how do you bring this product into your strands? Click the notes. –– Kelly Rowe

braid

Rope braids are twisted as they’re plaited, making them more dimensional than other braids, and less prone to flyaways. Adding a few of these braids to a simple bun adds texture and interest. A simple three-strand brand on the opposite side creates subtle asymmetry for a romantic style that appears windblown and loose but has enough support to last through a full day of festivities. Wear it to a wedding, birthday party, or picnic. Get step-by-step instructions in the style notes. –– Laura Martin

umathurman

Spotted at the Venice Film Festival Uma Thurman looks suitably classy and elegant in this romantic updo. With strands flying free, the style feels delicate and light, while the back has the magic touch. Adding visual interest, Uma has rolled her hair into two mini braid-like twists, and swirled them into a bun. Messy, undone, and with a unique twist in the back the style is contemporary, on trend, and ripe for stealing. Get our tips in the style notes.

waves

A style made famous by the film stars of the forties, glamorous neck-grazing waves combined with a deep, stylistic side-part is a classic style that remains as sexy and as sophisticated as it ever was. The face-framing asymmetry and the cascading curls will never go out of fashion because it is a naturally beautifying style. In days gone by this look would have been created with a brushed out roller set; nowadays, though, instead of having to set hair over several hours, or even overnight, you can use hot-tools to make this look as quick as a flash.
