The eighties are working their way back into the world of fashion, especially in hair and makeup. Orange lipstick, blue eyeshadow, and intentional frizz are just a few of the re-emerging trends. The latest incarnation of these looks is more streamlined than the originals while maintaining the glamour and playfulness than defined eighties style. When it comes to hair the eighties gave us wet-look texture, tousled curls, big volume, and side-swept parts. Click the notes for eighties inspiration and tips on contemporary adaptation. –– Laura Martin
In the eighties wet look hair was worn sleek and dripping. The contemporary version is more of a damp look and worn looser, with natural texture showing through the ends.
Eighties waves and curls were worn either crunchy with gel or in a big wild halo, for a modern version try a subtler, more natural texture and volume that’s less extreme.
Hair worn with lots of lift was an eighties staple. Bring it up to date by adding some separating and keeping it soft and touchable.
The eighties side sweep was carefully sculpted and worn in full, dramatic wave. To make it look current use less product for a softer finish.
