Toughen up your pony with a banded twist and dreaded texture. This grungy version of the childhood classic reminds us of the 90s, when Doc Martins seemed the perfect accessory to every outfit, and texture products were all the rage. A deep side part and loose tendrils around the face keep the look feminine and wearable. Grungy looks are easier to do than you think; click style notes for top tips.
Step: Apply a layer of refinish dry shampoo all over hair to create grip and volume. Take a small section on one side of the head and backcomb gently at the root. Twist hair a few times and backcomb again, continue to ends. Then, starting at the root, wrap the twist in elastic or add small rubber bands at even intervals.
Step: In the crown, take a large section of hair and backbrush gently into roots. Repeat on two to three sections on top of the head until desire volume is accomplished.
Step: Use your fingers to gently pull hair back into a loose ponytail at the nape. Pull out a few strands for a softer finish; use texture paste on the ends of the pony for woolliness.
