Last year the New York Times featured what they called the man bun. The article inspired others to muse about long hair for men; spawned a man bun tumblr; and how-to videos on youtube. Scott Schuman, of The Sartorialist, highlighted fashionable men wearing them at Pitti Uomo, a menswear trade show. Some critics hoped the trend would die, yet we continue to see strapping gentlemen striding the streets with long hair wrapped up. Dare your man do the same? A validating history lesson may be the way to make him bun. For some background, click style notes.

— In many Asian and European cultures, messy hair is considered a dishonorable disgrace, making man buns a necessity –– ask him, is he noble or besmirched?

— A number of celebrity men have worn long hair up. Most notably, designer Oliver Theyskens, rocker Gavin Rossdale, and soccer player David Beckham –– show him how the bun makes the man.
